NOTES

The Wordsworths lived from October 1806 till June 1807 on the Beaumont estate at Coleorton, Leicestershire, while the Beaumonts were at their town residence in Grosvenor Square and, subsequently, in the Lake District, whither this letter was readdressed.

One member of Wordsworth’s antithetical couple ‘the public’ and ‘the people’, which he seems to have invented about this time (see MY, i. 194) and was to use in the Essay, Supplementary (pp. 213–14).

William Pitt (1759–1806), Prime Minister during most of the early stages of the French war; Charles James Fox, see p. 102; James Pauli (1770–1808) and Sir Francis Burdett (1770–1844), rival candidates for the Parliamentary seat of Westminster in 1807, fought a duel on 2 May 1807 in which both were wounded. Honiton had been held by Lord Cochrane, who abandoned it to contest the Westminster election, in which he and Burdett were returned.

Cf. Exc. iv. 763–5.

Samuel Rogers (1763–1855), poet, business man, and friend of Wordsworth.

The Poems of 1807 contain a section ‘Sonnets dedicated to Liberty’, the germ of the larger group ‘Poems dedicated to National Independence and Liberty’ in Wordsworth’s standard text.

Another section in the Poems of 1807: its most notable poems are perhaps ‘My heart leaps up’, ‘I wandered lonely’, and ‘To the Cuckoo’.

This elaborate discussion of a trivial poem anticipates the account of the ‘creative’ powers of the Imagination in the Preface of 1815 (pp. 183–4). Mrs Fermor, who called it forth, was Lady Beaumont’s sister.

Paradise Lost, iv. 604–9.

‘I wandered lonely’ and ‘Who fancied what a pretty sight’ (PW, ii. 216–17, 148–9).

Wordsworth’s third sonnet ‘To Sleep’, line 13 (PW, iii. 8–9).

Repeated in Essay, Supplementary (p. 210); the rest of the sentence anticipates the drift of the Essay.
